La Galerie de la Belle au Bois Dormant – on the first floor of Sleeping Beauty Castle – tells the story of the Disney classic. As well as the hand-made Aubusson tapestries, there are nine majestic stained-glass windows. These were created by Paul Chapman, who also restored the stained-glass windows at Notre-Dame de Paris a few years ago. One of these windows depicts the magical kiss between Princess Aurora and Prince Philip, and a miniature replica can be seen in the Royal Collection Boutique at Disneyland Hotel.
The art of stained glass making – a unique skill
Since it opened in 1992, Disneyland Paris has showcased arts and crafts in a variety of ways, including the stained-glass windows in Sleeping Beauty Castle. As part of this strategy, the Merchandise teams at Disneyland Paris called on France Vitrail, a glass craft studio based in the Paris region, to create an exceptional product available for sale – a reproduction of one of the stained-glass windows in Sleeping Beauty castle. This exclusive limited edition of 50 pieces showcases the artistry of a master stained-glass craftsman, with each window requiring no less than three days of meticulous handwork.
Stained glass art can be found in a number of places at Disneyland Paris, including the lounges at Walt’s – an American restaurant and the glass panes in some of the shops on Main Street, U.S.A. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the resort, a replica of a medallion from Disneyland Railroad Main Street Station was released.
A royal boutique at Disneyland Hotel
With decorations inspired by illuminated manuscripts and antique books from the finest libraries of French châteaux, the Royal Collection Boutique is also adorned with shades of gold and references to Disney royal stories, such as the emblems of the Disney Princesses. Here, guests can see the collection of stained-glass windows sold only at Disneyland Hotel.
