MORE THAN A HOTEL: A MASTERPIECE
Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel will have one of the largest collections of Marvel artwork in the world, with more than 350 items on display, including 50 exclusive and never-before-seen pieces. More than 110 artists from Marvel Comics, Marvel Studios and more have brought together an incredible collection of contemporary art showcasing the vast scope of the Marvel Universe including comic book covers, posters, illustrations from films, storyboards, original sketches and more. From France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom to Argentina, Japan, Canada and the United States, an unparalleled diversity of artistic styles will be featured such as classic back-andwhite comics, street art, pop art, hyperrealism and technics, including engraved metal and collage art.
The talented European artists responsible for some of the exclusive artwork include:
French Marvel artist Olivier Coipel, famous for his work on The Avengers, Thor and Spider-Man, created a powerful representation of Thor: God of Thunder in a comic-book style, using an overlap of vibrant red and blue colors highlighting the duality between the Super Hero’s mythological and human sides and using forced perspective to bring out the action.
French Marvel artist Stéphanie Hans, featured in Marvel Comics including Asgardians of the Galaxy, Black Bolt and many more, created an impressive realistic portrait of a determined and strong Captain Marvel, depicted in full flight and surrounded by her photonic power.
UK comic book artist Tula Lotay, whose work on Marvel Comics include stories of powerful Characters like Black Widow, Gamora and Scarlet Witch, created a vibrant and strong comic-book style portrait of Black Widow whose black costume contrasts with the almost expressionistic brightly colored background.
Italian designers and twin brothers Van Orton, have created incredible pop art and almost neon-like portraits of Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther and Captain Marvel using bright and vibrant colors.
UK artist Liam Brazier, known for his geometric reinterpretations of iconic characters, created several pieces for the hotel including heroic contemporary portraits of Captain America, Thor and Hulk using saturated and bright colors as well as lines highlighting the dynamism of the Super Heroes’ poses.
Spanish artist Carlos Gomez created huge backlit black and white comic panels that will greet Guests as they enter the lobby, depicting the exciting and dynamic story of the Avengers uniting in New York City in an inclusive way, to be understandable by everyone even with no dialogue.
Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel will also include a space dedicated to temporary art exhibitions, The Jack Kirby Legacy Gallery, that will showcase artworks for limited periods. This area will also offer a permanent exhibition dedicated to Jack Kirby himself – the “The King of Comics” – with 21 comic book covers drawn by this legend. It is to him that we owe the creation of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, the adventures of Thor and the Avengers. Guests eager to learn more about the stories behind the artwork displayed in the hotel lobby and Jack Kirby Legacy Gallery will be invited to call upon our Art Guardians, a selection of specially trained Cast Members with additional knowledge.
The hotel boutique has been thought of as a museum shop where guests can purchase beautiful reproductions of some of the Marvel artwork displayed in the hotel. This boutique, directly inspired by Tony Stark’s iconic Wall Of Armor, will display collector figurines, art books, exclusive editions of Marvel Comic Books and many items directly related to the architecture and design of the hotel, including statuette reproductions of Iron Man armors on display in the lobby.

On June 21, after undergoing many months of transformation, Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel will open its doors, with more than 500 Cast Members as part of the adventure! Representing more than 60 professions, they play a key role in helping make Guests’ stays unforgettable. With just a few weeks to go before the opening, Cast Members have followed an innovative, immersive and interactive training program designed exclusively by our Training teams. Everything is provided to help them take their first steps in the hotel with confidence.
In the same spirit of this unique hotel – inspired by a modern New York art gallery where more than 350 works of Marvel art will be on display for Guests – these teams have developed a unique day in the training program for each Cast Member, called “A Day at Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel.” Based on the principle of an escape game, this fun and interactive training course meets several educational objectives: understanding and knowing how to explain the concept of the hotel, knowing how to orient Guests, knowing the Marvel Super Heroes and knowing the main works of art exhibited in the hotel, as well as their artistic style. Throughout the day, Cast are divided into teams to learn about the hotel by solving puzzles. This innovative training is the result of a successful collaboration between our Training teams, Walt Disney Imagineering and the Marvel team.
Once completed, Cast Members take a guided tour of the hotel and discover the Marvel works of art that they have seen during the training. They also take a more in-depth look at certain areas, such as Marvel Design Studio and Super Hero Station.
The quality of service at this four-star hotel is reflected in the premium training experience offered to Cast Members. Gaëlle Marzin, Training and Development Manager, explains: “It’s an individualized experience which meets the needs of each Cast Member.” In total, more than 10,000 hours of training will have been delivered between now and the opening of the hotel, in hybrid learning format combining digital, face-to-face and on-site experiences.
Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel is about to open to Guests, and it is one of the most anticipated experiences coming to Disneyland Paris. The 4-star hotel has been reimagined to be the first ever hotel dedicated entirely to incredible Marvel artwork in what will be one of the largest publicly viewable collections around the world. We recently got chance to check in with Sylvie Massara, Art Director at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris – Design & Show Quality, and Thomas Muller, Scenographer, to learn about one of the hotel’s most emblematic (and most stunning) décor elements.
Q: Sylvie, Thomas, thank you for taking the time to chat. Can you tell us about yourselves?
Sylvie: As an Art Director at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris – Design & Show Quality, in charge of Disneyland Paris hotels, my role is to translate the artistic direction defined by our creative leadership into designs that make most of the available space, while working well for our operations partners who will bring the experience to life for guests every day. I lead a small team of four – including Thomas – who handle the overall management of the project.
Thomas: A scenographer by trade, I assist Sylvie with the operational monitoring of the project, including consulting with contractors, supervising efforts on the construction sites and remaining connected with Imagineers based in Glendale, California, who are responsible for all things Marvel.
Q: Tell us more about this chandelier. What’s so special about it? How does it fit within the storytelling of the reimagined hotel?
Sylvie: We used most of 2020 to finalize fixtures and install mural elements – including a very special chandelier. For the Manhattan Restaurant, we wanted to recreate the elegant atmosphere of a high-end New York dining experience where references to Marvel art are subtle and contemporary art prevails. We also wanted a central element to “wow” Guests. The idea of a magnificent sculptural piece of lighting came up. This chandelier, with its inverted-pyramid shape, fits well in the technical constrains of the building, while its shape, material and color evoke the realm of Asgard, all the while alluding to Manhattan skyscrapers.
Q: What’s the history of this impressive piece of décor? Any fun anecdotes?
Sylvie: To produce this unique piece of décor, I was looking to partner with a vendor that would combine unrivalled expertise at working with metal and glass, a close understanding of the artistic demands, and capability to deliver the contemporary, elegant look and feel we were looking for. Back in 2017, we identified several vendors, all based in Prague, Czech Republic – known worldwide as home to Bohemian crystal craft. We partnered with Lasvit, a vendor that assigned a dedicated designer to the project, and we were on the same wavelength from the start. Each component was glass-blown traditionally in Bohemian crystal glass. We played with the champagne, amber and light crystal colors. In addition, each component is silver-plated from the inside with pure silver. Some elements are twisted or shaped as trapezes of various sizes in order to epitomize inverted New York skyscrapers. There are more than 225 glass pieces in this four-meter-tall chandelier that took a year to create.
Thomas: Many of the challenges we’ve encountered along the way had to do with the integration of this out-of-the-norm chandelier into the existing structure. First, the ceiling it hangs from had to be reinforced. To support that weight, we integrated a metallic structure in the concrete slab covered by a metallic color board. Also, the ceiling has integrated technical tubing, and we even rerouted the air conditioning system to accommodate it.
Q: How do you expect Guests to react when they first visit the hotel, and in particular, when they discover the chandelier?
Sylvie: From the outset, we have wanted this chandelier to become an iconic element of the Guest experience. Obviously, it takes a holistic approach to the experience to achieve this result. For example, we work with a lighting designer to ensure that all lighting fixtures in the restaurant provide an atmosphere that allows the chandelier to revel in all its beauty. Let’s take a look at an exclusive preview of the Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel, including a presentation of the Manhattan Restaurant with Thomas.
