The challenge was to marry theme, function and safety – and this has been achieved brilliantly in the paving projects multiplying throughout the resort. A practical and aesthetic detail of great importance in the global experience lived daily by Disneyland Paris visitors.
Just like Fantasia Gardens situated in front of the Disneyland Hotel, many areas of Disneyland© Paris are seeing poured concrete replaced by paving slabs. In 2011, all the Fantasyland floors had been refurbished, followed by the esplanade in front of the Walt Disney Studios Park. In the last few months, those projects “paved” the way for similar worksites in both parks (Adventureland, Discoveryland, Front Lot, Production Courtyard) and even around Lake Disney.
Paving slabs are not suited for all lands because of area theming or particular architecture of each sites. Constant consultation with Walt Disney Imagineering adn Facilities Assets Management teams is necessary to design walkways in harmony with the identity of a location so that the theme and the immersive experience for the guests is maintained. The teams also plan the work carefully so as not to obstruct traffic: paving 10,000 m² of floors in Fantasia Gardens, located right at the entrance of Disneyland Park and crossed every day by thousands of people, indeed represents a real challenge!
The benefits of paving slabs over concrete are undeniable. Such a walkway is more resistant to bad weather (frost, thawing and high temperatures). Also, working on underground networks is easier. Finally, repairing surfaces after any work is also less time-consuming and leaves hardly any trace.
