22 years old, and, still going strong! The public loves it! Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show…with Mickey and friends! is a classic at Disneyland Paris, since it was launched at Disney Village in April 1992, at the same time as the whole destination. On 18 November, this dinner-show, the largest show of all Disney parks, celebrated a symbolic threshold as it welcomed its 10 millionth spectator. What could better prove the timeless quality of this unique production ?
The Far West at the doors of Paris
Each evening*, nearly 2 000 persons meet in an elegant wooden theatre, with a real arena that recreates the mind-boggling universe of the plains and ranches of the Far West. Various Disney characters invite the spectators to join Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show…with Mickey and friends!, a liveshow that invites them to relive the conquest of the West and to meet the famous Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull, Annie Oakley and the actors of the wild West. This show of great intensity and authenticity is inspired from the historical tour created by Buffalo Bill himself between 1882 and 1912, and includes the life of the pioneers, demonstrations of Indian rituals, the rodeo with horse stunts, the arrival of the bison, a shooting context to which the spectators themselves will participate, and lastly the famous stagecoach race. The dinner, faithful to the purest Tex-Mex tradition, is served throughout the evening in tin plates worthy of the roughest cowboys.
An exceptionally realistic show
50 technicians and 60 artists bring this world-unique show to life that obeys to one single rule: authenticity. Whether it’s the animals, the accessories or the artists, nothing has been left to chance. The bison came straight from Canada, the longhorn cows from Texas and the horses correspond exactly to the ones of the time: Pintos and Appaloosas for the Indians, while the cowboys ride Quarter Horses brought just for them from the U.S.A.
A lot of research was carried out to come up with the costumes and accessorieswhile studies were made on ancient tunics. Special care was given to the design of Buffalo Bill’s and Annie Oakley’s saddles to reproduce those used by the two characters in their time. Leather professionals were called in to design the Indian costumes as well as the accessories. The paintings on the War shirts were done by hand as well as the Indian headdress. Last but not least, accessories such as the shields, bows and lances were made by hand, true to the methods used in the past by the Indians.
Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show…with Mickey and friends! is the embodiment of a real live show, and it uses the best horsemen, real rodeo and lasso champions. Riding next to the professional actors, the Indiansactually belong to various tribes: the majority is Blackfeet from the North-West of the US, Crows from Montana, Sioux from South Dakota, Crees from Canada (province of Alberta more precisely) and a few Navajos from New-Mexico.
Celebrating the 10 millionth spectator
On 18 November, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show…with Mickey and friends! welcomed its 10 millionth spectator! The family that crossed the symbolic line was invited to enjoy an unforgettable “Western VIP” experience. They started with a souvenir photograph in the arena with the artists from the dinner-show, were treated to an exclusive visit of the backstage area and placed in a privatized area with VIP service. The family members also received a souvenir gift and were customized in Indian or Western style with accessories from the show, and finally attended the show together with Antonella and Jonathan, the Disneyland Paris 2012-2014 Ambassadors.
Jean-Michel Van Den Nouwland, the Director of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show…with Mickey and friends! shares his team’s pride in this new triumph: “It is a great moment for all our team to welcome the 10 millionth spectator. Some of our Cast Members have worked in this show from the beginning, so imagine how they feel. This success is a testimonial of the quality of our production, which is truly open to all. The link between the families that come to see the Buffalo Bill Show and the show’s “family at large” is automatic.”
